Introduction
A record-breaking number of UK taxpayers have filed their Self Assessment tax returns early for the current tax cycle. According to official HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) figures, nearly 740,000 individuals submitted their returns in April alone, with a substantial portion filing on Day One.
The Shift to Digital Tax Reporting
The surge in early filings comes alongside massive regulatory updates. Sole traders and landlords must now navigate the phased rollout of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax:
- Current Threshold: Sole traders and landlords with a turnover exceeding £50,000 are now legally required to keep digital records and submit quarterly summaries.
- Future Expansion: This mandatory requirement will extend to individuals with a combined turnover above £30,000.
Important Note for Pensioners
Taxpayers should also be aware of changes regarding government support clawbacks. High-income pensioners with total earnings exceeding £35,000 must now repay their Winter Fuel Payments, a process HMRC is automatically recovering through the Self Assessment system.
